| Maurizio Cattelan | Hanging Kids | Milano, May 5th, 2004 |
| The Fondazione Nicola Trussardi presents a
new installation by Maurizio Cattelan conceived for one
of the most significant sites in the city of Milan. Hanging three kids from their necks in an oak tree in Milan park is a good way of getting in touch with your inner child. "Childhood, this strange place where traumas happen and you dream incredible dreams, is a place I always return to," says Maurizio Cattelan. With this new project by Maurizio Cattelan, the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi continues its adventure in the public spaces of the city of Milan: in the monumental setting of Piazza XXIV Maggio crisscross of history with its references to both Napoleons campaigns and the episodes of the World Wars Maurizio Cattelan stages the epilogue of a macabre fairy tale, an ancient popular ritual and a new urban legend. A disenchanted view on childhood, Maurizio Cattelans new installation is also a reflection on the role of the artist, seen as the ringmaster of a circus, in which cruelty and entertainment meet and overlap. The installation provoked immediate comment, stimulating criticism and controversy, and involving the entire city in a spontaneous debate at the site of the work to discuss the greater issue of violence in today's world, the ambiguity of images of contemporary reality, and the relationship of the public with breakthrough public installation. The debate has continued in public and in the media even after the sculpture was vandalized on the evening of Thursday May 6th. Maurizio Cattelan's installation -- conceived and produced for Piazza XXIV Maggio in Milan -- is no longer visible on site but will soon be shown again at the International Sevilla Biennial directed by Harald ¬Szeemann. |
